Artist's Statement about this work: The illumination of the canyon by morning light is something to be experienced, not just viewed. With this plein air piece, I tried to capture the cool dampness of the morning, the awakening of the flora and fauna, and the light as it leaps from ridge to ridge. It was also a chance for me to experiment with acrylic touches atop watercolor foundations, and will lead to further such exploration in the future.

Artist's Statement about this work: This work attempts to show the power of massive amounts of water flowing over Kootenai Falls in western Montana. The dog is straining, alert to something happening upriver. The tension created between the energy of the river and that of the dog is the underlying current of this painting.

It’s human nature to judge by appearance, and to assume anyone that looks different from you deserves scrutiny. Perhaps it’s time for us to be more accepting, so that our alien friends can feel welcome too.
